Music and the Force

Music is magical. It is this singular entity, a ghost of creativity haunting us omnipresently. In our cars and stores, and near constantly in our ears. It can be sadness or anger or happiness depending on how you play a note. It can ooze sex or it can shrink you to nothing, all depending on context. The right song in the right moment is the key and we are the lock. In my mind, music is like the Force from Star Wars. It is the closest thing we have to proof of the collective unconscious, the connection of all life.

I can’t comprehend people who “don’t like music”. What is there to dislike? Is it rhythm? Or melody? I hope if you’re reading this, you aren’t one of these people. They’re missing something so fundamental to life that it seems to be pure ignorance.

That’s why I hate the idea of genre.

Something as essential as music cannot and should not be relegated to genre to sell a few more albums or singles. Obviously, under capitalism, we have to SELL the PRODUCT. The PRODUCT is the most important thing. How the musician looks and acts and dresses. How they create their brand. I don’t want to be a brand. I want to make some good fucking music. We label our music to help make it fit, but I really wish we didn’t have to do that. A pipe dream, unfortunately.

There is nothing quite like making music with a group of like minded people. I can physically make music on my own, and plenty of amazing artists do just that, but when you can get that group mentality just right, it’s heavenly. MD happens to have that group mentality. There are no massive egos to contend with. The music is the goal. It is democratic, it is unique, and it is wonderful.

MD is focused on love. It is what we lead with and what we carry with us. Love is what I feel in those moments. Writing a lyric down, “what about this riff?”, playing a melody. It’s love. Loving what we do. Loving to create, to share. That’s what we need now more than ever.

Keep listening, keep creating. Never let the bastards keep you down.

Bella ciao,

Matt
